Weingut Andres

Nestled in the heart of Deidesheim along the famous Deutsche Weinstraße, Weingut Andres is a family estate that embodies the perfect balance between tradition and a bold new vision. Founded by the brothers' grandfather, the estate has been passed down through three generations, each leaving its own mark on this exceptional property in the Mittelhaardt.

Since 2015, brothers Michael and Thomas Andres have taken the reins from their father Matthias, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge — Michael having studied oenology in Geisenheim and Thomas wine business management in Heilbronn. Known in the wine scene as the "Flintstone Brothers" for their distinctively reductive winemaking style, the duo has quickly become one of the most exciting names in German wine.

Farming 21 hectares of certified organic vineyards across some of the finest sites in Deidesheim, Königsbach and Forst — including the prestigious Königsbacher Idig, Forster Ungeheuer and Deidesheimer Kieselberg — the brothers work with a diverse range of soils, from lean Buntsandstein to rich limestone marl, always striving to express the individuality of each terroir.

With Riesling at the heart of the estate, alongside beautifully crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the wines of Weingut Andres are celebrated for their precision, minerality, and elegant structure. Rich yet refined, they offer exceptional drinking pleasure in their youth while carrying a remarkable potential for ageing.

Guided by the motto "back to the roots", Michael and Thomas combine meticulous hand work in the vineyard with minimal intervention in the cellar — slow fermentation on natural yeasts and ageing in large traditional oak barrels — to produce wines that are authentic ambassadors of Deidesheim and the Pfalz.

Weingut Andres, Pfalz Riesling vom Buntsandstein, Trocken 2025
£20.00

This estate Riesling draws its character from the red sandstone soils of the Mittelhaardt. Fermented with natural yeasts and aged partly in large oak casks, it strikes a balance between fruit and mineral precision. Expect lime zest, green apple and white peach on the nose, with a dry, juicy palate underpinned by lively acidity and a stony, lingering finish. A wine of clarity and quiet confidence.

Whites

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Deidesheime Riesling, 2025
£25.00

A significant step up from the estate range, this village-level Riesling is sourced primarily from the premier sites of Herrgottsacker and Leinhöhle in Deidesheim — two of the Mittelhaardt's most respected vineyard sites. The mixed soils of red sandstone and marl give the wine both tension and substance, a combination that shows clearly in the glass. Natural yeast fermentation and ageing half in large oak casks, half in steel add texture and complexity without weight. Peach, lime, fresh herbs and a hint of brioche on the nose; on the palate it is crisp, focused and notably long, with a mineral drive and amazing lift. Direct and immense pleasure.

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Königsbacher Ölberg, Riesling, 2024
£39.00

The Ölberg is one of Königsbach's finest Grand Cru sites — a high, cool vineyard where calcareous marl soils and cold air currents from the forest bring Riesling of uncommon precision and tension. This is Andres at their most serious. Spontaneously fermented and aged entirely in large Palatinate oak barrels on the full lees. The wine develops an almost creamy texture while retaining a spine of stony, saline minerality that continues to an extremely long finish. Apricot, mirabelle, grapefruit and lemon balm on the nose; a hint of smoke and wet chalk underneath. On the palate enormous tension and gourmandise almost candy like, crystalline fruit and a saltiness that keeps developing. A wine built to age, but already compelling and so gorgeous in its youth.

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Forster Ungeheuer, Riesling, 2024
£48.00

The Forster Ungeheuer is one of the Pfalz region greatest vineyard site — a Grand Cru “Große Lage” of exceptional geological complexity, where basalt, calcareous marl and red sandstone sit side by side, each contributing something different: warmth and pressure from the basalt, salinity and freshness from the chalk, body and structure from the sandstone. Andres farm their parcel on the mid-slope at 130–180 metres, with yields held to around 30 hl/ha. Spontaneously fermented and aged entirely on the lees in large oak, the 2024 is focused and precise rather than opulent — a cooler-year expression that leans into the site's tension over its richness. Citrus, yellow apple, apricot and a whisper of mango on the nose, with a quiet, smoky reduction and wet stone beneath. The palate is precise, with a crystalline fruit core, vibrant acidity and a saline, stony finish of remarkable length. A wine of real seriousness and considerable ageing potential.

Reds

Weingut Andres, Pfalz Spätburgunder vom Kalkmergel 2024
£22.00

From their biodynamically farmed vineyards across Ruppertsberg, Königsbach and Haardt, brothers Michael and Thomas Andres make a strikingly expressive Spätburgunder from the calcareous marl soils of the Mittelhaardt. A long maceration and ageing in used barrique give this wine real depth and presence — dark cherry, blackberry, sloe and plum are layered with notes of forest floor, black olive and a touch of smoke. The palate is full and structured, with grippy but well-managed tannins, earthy spice and a long, mineral finish. More Burgundy than many dare to go in the Pfalz.

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Haardt, Spätburgunder 2024
£29.00

Sourced from a single vineyard on the Haardt hillside — the sites of Herrenletten and Mandelring — this village Spätburgunder is grown on deeply calcareous marl soils that give it an edge of tension and mineral precision the estate wine doesn't quite reach. Hand-harvested, macerated on the skins and aged in old oak barrique. In the glass it displays a deep, almost impenetrable carmine hue. The nose is intensely red- and dark-fruited: wild strawberry, sour cherry and cassis layered with plum, a touch of rose petal and a beguiling thread of smoke. On the palate the fruit has a dark, extractive core — generous but never heavy — with fine, silky tannins, a hint of bitter chocolate, and a long, saline finish with a lift of wild herbs. One of the most complete Spätburgunders in the Andres range.

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Königsbach Ölberg, Spätburgunder, 2024
£53.00

The most ambitious red and arguably one of the most compelling Spätburgunders in the Pfalz and the flagship at Weingut Andres. The vineyard sits at the boundary of the Ölberg and the legendary Königsbacher Idig, with a south-facing aspect and a very high proportion of calcareous marl — conditions that come close to a Burgundian premier cru in geological terms. Yields are a strict 20 hl/ha. Spontaneously fermented and aged in equal parts new and used barrique, the wine shines with real structure and presence without losing its elegance. Fine red fruit — sour cherry, redcurrant — shifts towards darker fruit notes and tobacco, underpinned by a cool mineral streak, graphite and a silky but firm tannic grip. The finish is long, saline and complex, with considerable ageing potential. A wine that rewards patience, and quite simply a show stopper.

Sweet

Weingut Andres, Pfalz, Deidesheime Kieselberg Riesling, Spätlese, 2024
£25.00

A rare and rather beautiful break from the dry style that defines most of the Andres range. The Kieselberg — a plateau above Deidesheim formed by calcareous loess deposits over red sandstone — is one of the coolest and most mineral sites in the village, swept by air the nearby Forrest and yielding wines of notable elegance and finesse. In Spätlese form, with naturally retained residual sugar balanced against the site's characteristic bracing acidity, the wine achieves a classical poise that few German wine styles can match. A style mostly found in the Mosel, rarely seen in the Pfalz as this is simply a warmer region. Lime, white peach and delicate orchard fruit on the nose, with a faint herbal lift and the cool, saline mineral thread that runs through every sip. On the palate the sweetness is subtle and perfectly balanced — light, focused and long, with a finish that is simultaneously refreshing and lingering. Awarded 2nd place at the Best of Riesling 2025 by the celebrated Review Meininger.
