Florent Thinon, Cote Roannaise 'Le Rouge' 2023

£25.80

Le Rouge, a simple name for a big wine.

Made from Gamay Saint Romain grape which has smaller clusters than Gamay from the Beaujolais, hence a darker coloured wines and also a crunchy and peppery nose it could be mistaken with a Mencia from Galicia or a Syrah from the Northern Rhone.

One of our best seller within our trade clients, due to its versatility. Stunning wine.

Made from the Gamay Saint-Romain grape, which has smaller berries and thicker skins than Beaujolais’ Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, this is a tremendous red wine brimming with spice, white pepper and black cherry fruit.  It is combative, challenging and lip-smacking, and if you have never tasted this rare grape before, imagine Mencía and Serine enjoyed a fruitful fling resulting in a fascinating and unique offspring.  The use of 40% whole bunches and concrete fermenters means this wine is as characterful and opinionated as it gets!  I love it.  18/20 - Matthew Jukes

Part of the young generation bringing energy and buzz in the volcanic part of the Loire Valley. Once forgotten, this region is now brimming with dynamic vignerons. Florent trained in Beaune, mingling with sons and daughters of famed Burgundian estate like Domaine Pierre Yves Colin Morey, Arnoux-Lachaux and Cornu. Sometimes temping for them. At the same time, heling his uncle switch the Domaine towards organic and biodynamic viticulture. He trained in Beaujolais at Chateau Thivin and with local icons Domaine Serol and Domaine des Berioles. The vineyards are vastly planted with Gamay Saint Romain (7ha) and a few, recently planted, plots of Chenin blanc (1ha). His winemaking style is flawless, hand harvest in small crates, 30 to 40% whole bunch fermentation with indigenous yeast and fermentation in concrete tank.
