Julien Crinquand | Les Canons du Jean
Julien Crinquand is amongst the young generation of brilliant vignerons in the Jura. Situated in the small village of Les Arsures, the young and dynamic Julien did not choose to take over the family vineyards at first, The Grapes were sold to the cooperative in Arbois. Instead, he studied insurance and sold holidays. he came back to the jura in 2016.
He came back to the jura in 2016. attracted by the vines that made a huge impact on him during his teenage years. He first helped his father and then fellow Jura makers Philippe Bonnard and Fabrice Dodane. In 2017 he retrained in viticulture and oenology and worked with Dodane at Domaine de St Pierre.
In 2019, He officially took over the vineyards of his father and grandfather, the cartoon on his labels. The Domaine consist of 5 hectares of vines in 3 distinctive area: Les Bodines, La Mailloche and Verleule. The vineyards are planted with all 5 main Jura grapes varieties Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Poulssard and Trousseau, producing 2/3rd of White and 1/3rd of red wines.
His cellars are set next to the family home, he has a hands-off approach but doesn’t like funky wines. Combining stainless steel and oak barrels. Therefore, the wines are precise, fresh and crystallin. He is soon to be the little darling of the Jura.
The Wines
An absolutely rare bottling from Julien Crinquand, who kept a couple of barrels of Savagnin from 2021 ageing for four years. 2021 was a fresh vintage, and its vibrancy shines throughout. The way he managed to keep oxidation at bay for so long is a mystery, present only as a gentle murmur on the mid-palate. Such an ethereal wine, it delivers such a thrill that we are bound to run out of superlatives and descriptors.
Simply a must-have.
Such a contrast to the fresh 2021. The 2020 SAV du Jean is proudly labeled as Cuvée OXY—a budget, Vin Jaune–inspired version. Bearing the ripeness of the vintage, it is a bold and expressive wine, yet with refinement. Expect layers of dried nuts, herbs, smoke, and umami. A showstopper.
We knew the reds from Julien Crinquand in 2023 were impressive, but this Chardonnay is probably the best he has ever made. The Jura purity and precision in this cuvée are beautifully executed, making it both approachable and versatile. It carries an easygoing natural touch that pairs effortlessly with a wide variety of dishes.
Long gone are the days when Julien was known for funky wines. La Cuvée du D’jopin is lean and clean as a whistle. Run, don’t walk.
2023 is one of the best red vintages in years, making this “house” blend an absolute joy. The Poulsard, in particular, has never been this dark and concentrated. This wine is a perfect love letter to the Jura—cherry juice and smoky character, with just the right touch of herbal notes. It’s expressive, inviting, and impossible to resist.
Le P’tit Prince Trousseau is definitely on the heels of all Trousseau from Master Michel Gahier. A lively expression with fresh cherries and undergrowth, supported by a light tannic structure that lifts the wine to perfection. Not just “glou-glou”—truly joyful.
With this cuvée, Julien reaches a new level of his craft—he can now rub shoulders with peers like St. Pierre. There is so much finesse, delicacy, and playful cheekiness in this wine. Crunchy red goodness that deserves a place as a house staple.
