Thomas Rivier
Thomas Rivier also known as Tomix is a happy vigneron in Regnié Durette, Beaujolais. Thomas took over from his mum Claire in 2019, marking his first official vintage, although he produced a little 2018 as a taster while studying at the Macon Davayé wine school. Straight away he converted to organic viticulture and chose to vinify using semi-carbonique fermentation, whereas his parents were more traditional.
The vineyards consist of 4ha in a single plot on granitic soils right at the foot of the imposing and iconic village church. Before becoming a vigneron, Thomas was a garden architect and landscaper. The only design he does now is his labels. Tomix label will change every year depending on his inspiration and encounter of that year.
In 2020 Thomas replanted a part of the vineyard which was uprooted back in 2011. He will graft the rootstock himself, selecting the materials after harvest in his own vineyard. He is a perfectionist!
Thomas produces two different wines. Tomix, which is an early expression of the vintage and has a minimal intervention in the cellar, vinified in concrete vats, a Gamay in all its natural beauty. Domaine Thomas Rivier is aged for longer and in big foudres. Both are bottled with minimal So2.
His wines reflect his character, fun yet serious, delicious Gamay. Having tasted all his vintages, it’s clear to me that Thomas Rivier will be rocketed amongst Beaujolais’ finest Domaines in no time. A huge thank you goes to Antoine and Julien Sunier who kindly pointed me in Thomas’ direction.
